FeatherSnap Birdseed Recommendations:
- Black Oil Sunflower Seeds: These are versatile and attract a wide range of birds, including finches, chickadees, cardinals, nuthatches, and sparrows.
- Safflower Seeds: Attracts birds like cardinals, grosbeaks, and chickadees, and can be a good option if you're having problems with squirrels.
- Nyjer (Thistle) Seeds: Ideal for smaller birds with delicate beaks, like goldfinches, siskins, and redpolls.
- Peanuts: Shelled or unshelled peanuts are a great option for attracting woodpeckers, jays, and nuthatches. Make sure to offer unsalted, raw peanuts.
- Additional Considerations:
- Seasonal Adjustments: Consider the time of year when choosing seeds. For example, black oil sunflower seeds are good for spring when birds are nurturing their young, while thistle seeds provide fat for warmth in winter.
- Placement: Properly positioning your feeder can help you attract the birds you want to see and accommodate their needs.
Care Instructions:
To keep birds healthy and your smart bird feeder working like a charm, you’ll want to clean it regularly. Even wild birds can carry illnesses that could spread through shared feeders. A quick, regular cleaning helps keep them safe.
We recommend cleaning 1-2 times per month, but more if it’s hot, humid or if your feeder has been exposed to a lot of rain.
Here’s how:
- Dump out any leftover seed (right in the garbage, not the compost).
- Remove the camera before washing.
- Wash the feeder with warm, soapy water.
- Disinfect with diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach, 9 parts water).
- Use a bottle brush to get into all the nooks without needing to disassemble.
- Rinse well and let it dry completely before refilling with fresh seed and reattaching the camera.
